How will schools be measured for meeting their statutory responsibility? (Guidelines from the DfE)
- From January 2012, in order to be seen as effective by Ofsted, schools will have to demonstrate that their learners: ‘gain a well-informed understanding of the options and challenges facing them….. and that they have excellent experiences at school ensuring they are well equipped as they move through school and on into the next stage of their education, training or employment.’ Ofsted Inspection framework – as an additional criteria to overall effectiveness (p22) The evaluation schedule for the inspection of maintained schools and academies January 2012, No. 090098
- Pupil and Parent questionnaires given out by OFSTED at inspections will ask about the student and parents experiences of the schools Careers and IAG provision
- In 6-12 months there will be a thematic review of Careers/IAG provision assessing how schools are meeting their responsibilities
- Destination data will be monitored by schools up to 2 terms (October – March) after students have moved on
After speaking with the IAG team at the DfE it is very clear that the government values the importance of CE/IAG and are expecting schools to ensure that every pupil has access to quality information and experiences to help ensure smooth transitions in to further education or employment.
Our programmes meet the statutory responsibility for IAG but also go further by helping to raise aspirations, employability skills and independent career management and motivation. You can also be assured that the student experience is exceptional and remembered long after the session is finished. From £5 per student the programmes offer an unrivalled return on investment.

Thinking Child – Philosophy sessions – a way to develop ‘thinking children’.
Research has clearly established that Philosophy for Children (P4C) improves behaviour, motivation, and learning as children are encouraged to develop their own questions in response to a given stimulus.
P4C places emphasis on building social and emotional skills as well as cognitive abilities. Notable increases in open mindedness, reasoning and reasonableness – in and out of the classroom – are common effects of P4C.
Are these not some of the important core skills we would wish of any future employee?

Employability Questionnaire
Over the last six months Inspire2Exceed has been researching the question of employability amongst young people. A research paper from Young Enterprise stated that 3 out of 4 bosses say school leavers and graduates lack the basic skills needed to join the workforce.
We are investing in research around this issue, tasked to identify what these basic skills are that employers are looking for and how they would recognise these skills in young people.
With the information we gather we will produce a report for key stakeholders but also ensure that our own programmes use this information to support and guide students.
We have produced an online questionnaire and are asking anyone with responsibility and experience for recruiting school leavers and graduates to complete it and share their experiences with us. Please see http://www.inspire2exceed.co.uk/survey/ we would be grateful if you would share this request and link with your contacts.
We aim to have this report ready in April 2012.

What does CE/IAG look like in 2012 and beyond?
CE/IAG does not have to continue in the format it has been for the last 15 years or more, in fact some would argue that with growing numbers of young people unemployed the time for change is now.
Employers have many a vested interest in supporting schools to develop work ready students and the future of CE/IAG should include support from businesses.
In a time of financial pressure and change great quality CE/IAG may look like this:
- Regular and relevant Workshops and Seminars
- Embedding Careers Education into the curriculum
- Careers Events
- Work Experience/Shadowing
- Mentor led programmes
- Alumni Programmes
- Parent engagement
- Employer partnership
- One to one guidance for small numbers of students with high needs for intervention and support
More than half of these activities are free or the only cost is the time to administer and manage. Exceptional schools will combine all of the above in 2012 to demonstrate their commitment to student transitional success.
